The Spears 478 series adapter is made of schedule 40 PVC, has a female NPT connection and a spigot connection, connects pipes or fittings with different end types, and is suitable for waste water systems in residential applications. This schedule 40 (standard wall) fitting is made of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) for corrosion resistance, high strength, and less weight than fittings made from metal. PVC can be connected to other materials such as steel, copper, or cast iron using transition fittings. This adapter fitting connects pipes or fittings running in the same direction using a female National Pipe Taper (NPT) connection and a spigot connection. The female NPT end connects to male NPT threaded connections for a tighter seal than straight threads, and the spigot end fits into the end of a female unthreaded pipe. The fitting has an operating temperature range of 73 to 140 degrees F (23 to 60C). This adapter fitting meets American Society for Testing and Materials International (ASTM) D2466 and ASTM D2609 for quality assurance, National Sanitation Foundation International (NSF)/American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standard 61, Annex G for potable water, and conforms with lead content requirements for "lead free" plumbing as defined by California and Vermont. It is suitable for waste water systems in residential applications.Pipe fittings are components used for connecting, terminating, controlling flow, and changing the direction of piping in many different industries. When purchasing pipe fittings, consider the application, as this will affect material type, shape, size, and required durability. Fittings are available threaded or unthreaded, in many shapes, styles, sizes, and schedules (pipe wall thickness). Spears Manufacturing produces thermoplastic fittings and valves for fluid, drain, waste, and vent systems. The company, founded in 1969 and headquartered in Sylmar, CA, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.

I bought it to mount a cell phone booster antenna to the handrail of my RV ladderThe cell phone booster market is 1,000’s of times larger than the marine market; there are more than 9M RV’s registered in the USATruckers and RVers mount cell phone boosters (such as WeBoost) to improve connectivity in areas with weak cell tower signals. The Booster Antennas are frequently attached to a piece of ¾” or 1” ID PVC pipe (2’ to 5’ long) to add height. We drop the antennas when traveling, to avoid overhead obstructions (lamps, tree limbs, bridges, signs etc., but raise them when parked, to improve connectivity. This is easily accomplished with a ratcheting mount; just as with marine use.A PVC Schedule 40 pipe fitting adapter needs to be purchased: a ¾” Female NPT to either a ¾” or 1” Inner Diameter PVC pipe connector.
